Hog and Rocks Restaurant Review written by culinary guide, Emily Drevets
Located on a relatively quiet corner in the Mission, Hog and Rocks is the place to bring everyone, including your pals, your parents, your out-of-town visitors, your foodie friends, and even those hard-to-please people who really just want a good hamburger.
The Place: With a masculine feel that isn’t too over the top, Hog and Rocks mixes upscale and cas-ual vibes, exhibited by TV’s at the bar and a $17 hamburger on the menu. While it’s usu-ally sunny outside, the atmosphere inside is fun and relaxing with deep wood decor and top-notch service.
The Food and the Drink: This gastropub offers a nice mix of shared plates, bar bites, and larger entrees. Its spe-cialties, of course, are ham and oysters. For my foray into the world of the pig, I had the Jamondor Serrano ham. The thin slices of ham were piled on a thick slab of wood and sprinkled with white candied almonds. The meat also came with tender, house-made rosemary flatbread that offset the saltiness of the Serrano. The crunch and sweetness of the almond, the salty meaty hammy flavors, and the gluten-y goodness of the golden flatbread created the perfect bite.
Of course I couldn’t leave without getting at least one oyster. Certainly one of the best I’ve ever had, the Miyagi had some real meat and ocean flavor to it (in a good way).
The Must-Do: The bar program at Hog and Rocks revolves around what’s good and what’s in season, so you should try a seasonal cocktail. In summer, it might be a Cucumber Shiso Collins, with local cucumbers and locally-made vodka. Other cocktail stand-outs include the bal-samic strawberry margarita and the whisky peach Bellini made with peach-infused whis-ky.
