Bar Jules’ Duck Sandwich

February 17, 2012

Bar Jules turns up the heat with this sophisticated lunchtime sandwich. Though it doesn’t boast the soon-to-be-banned foie gras, it does beautifully showcase the flavorful perfection of duck’s other assets.

The Dish: Someone once told me that when I sing, I sound like a dying duck. As a result, I now feel the need to sing duck’s praises whenever I get the chance. Bar Jules’ Duck Sandwich with Salsa Verde and Chestnuts inspires the perfect ode.
Lean meat sits lovingly sandwiched between two toasted thin bread slices dusted with olive oil; chopped chestnuts add subtle sweetness and texture while letting the duck shine. Though it comes with a side of pasta salad, expect the sandwich to be the main event.

Key Ingredients: Duck, bread, chestnuts, salsa verde

The Place: Crowned one of Bon Appetit’s Best New Restaurants in America in 2009, Bar Jules is one of my favorite intimate restaurants in San Francisco. You won’t find a printed menu here; the menu changes daily and can only be found written on two chalkboards in the restaurant (and on their website). In contrast to vivacious Suppenküche next door, Bar Jules has a light and airy interior with a casual yet sophisticated vibe. This is the perfect place for a first date, meeting friends over lunch, or a casual business meeting. Whatever the occasion, Bar Jules is sure to hit the spot!
